Fiberglass. 4,5 x 4,5 x 4,5 m
Video monitor, translucent paper, and glue.
This work is a response to the censorship of my previous work Sine qua non (2005). Narcissus reproduces the neoclassical façade of the Palace of Justice in Santiago, twisting it to create a Möbius strip. The façade relief is made of translucent fiberglass at a scale of 1:6. The piece hangs in the lobby of the National Council of Arts and Culture building in Valparaiso, accompanied by a video monitor and a table. On the monitor, a continuous video shows how to make a Möbius strip, and on the table is a small fountain with facades of the Palace of Justice printed on translucent paper. As a result, people passing by the building can replicate the gesture of the work at a smaller scale. The video’s audio features an article by Gabriela Mistral, «No más cóndor mas huemul» (No more condor more huemul), written in 1925 for the newspaper El Mercurio. The text concerns the Chilean national symbols: the huemul and the condor. In the article, Mistral encourages the Chilean people to approach the sensitivity and intelligence of the Huemul (a deer) more closely than the violent claws of the Condor (a vulture).
