Estas 2 intervenciones fueron realizadas en el Centro Penitenciario de Santiago, donde las mujeres cumplen sus sentencias de por vida. Las barras de las ventanas caen como cascada al piso, la fibra de vidrio traslúcida se camufla con la fachada del edificio, pero las sombras de estas estructuras cambian dependiendo de la hora del día. El nombre de una de las intervenciones se constituye a partir del significado en español de la palabra ‘pena’, que por ser una palabra polisémica dependiendo de su contexto cambia su significado. En este caso puede estar vinculado a la tristeza o/y a un castigo judicial.
Simultáneamente a Penas, se realizó en el patio de visitas del Centro Penitenciario Punto de fuga, que consistió en la construcción de un volumen en fibra de vidrio que replicaba la perspectiva del propio patio. Esta pieza generaba una extensión visual del espacio, poniendo en tensión y relativizando el límite impuesto por la arquitectura penitenciaria, al vincularlo simbólicamente con el deseo de fuga.
Penas
This intervention was performed in the Women’s Penitentiary Center of Santiago, where women prisoners are carrying out their life sentences. The bars cascade into the floor, and the translucent glass fiber blends in smoothly with the building, but their shadows change position according to the time of the day. The Spanish word Penas has two different meanings; in the common slang, it means sorrow, pain, or sadness. On the other hand, though, in juridical instances, “Pena” means a criminal sentence.
